Your Living Family Tree

Staying Connected to the Past & Present

The Inspiration

During the spring of 1990's there were several events that inspired me the creation of this site. The first event was the beginning of my family history search, the second was a promise to my dying grandmother to reunite the family and finally the destruction of a town in southern Minnesota from a category 5 tornado.

Each of these events brought to life the importance of family, our connections and our histories. History is not just something we studied in school; it is something our families were a part of. Natural and manmade disasters can destroy that. Our connection to family can be destroyed by time, distance and busy lives. There had to be a way to reconnect families, restore ties to the past and present and preserve our families history.

The Goal

The goal of the site is to restore family ties. In generations past the connection between family members were close. This was a function of the fact that multiple generations lived in the same home, farm or neighborhood. This site will help restore that connection by using the strengths of current and future technology to bring families closer. Our goal is to once again allow families to share information between each other easily.

Our goal is to preserve the shared history of our families. The major difference here is the contextualization of the historical records. To date all genealogy program display our history in a basic view much like a bullet list of facts and numbers. By themselves they have no meaning other than interesting tidbits. We place each of these facts into their proper context and in doing so provide additional information and clues that will make it possible to find more facts by knowing where to look for them.

What We Offer You

The Living Family Tree© is and has been envisioned as the center point of your family. It starts with sharing your family history with all members of your family. Since each family generally has more than one family historian; this forum allows them to share information and compare notes. Additionally when new members are found everyone in your family will know about it. It will allow you to see your family’s history in the proper context of events of the world and the role they played in those events.

The Living Family Tree© will also provide a way for you to keep abreast of all the events going on with members of your family, no matter where they are. You will also have the ability to make the distinction between immediate and extended family when sharing information. Distance will no longer be an issue in family communications and this should have the added benefit of bringing families closer together. Our dream is to make everyday a family reunion not just a once a year or decade event.
